The Bissell Bolt ION Plus is the mid range vacuum of the Bissell Bolt Series. It doesn’t compromise on battery life and battery quality, and has the features of the more expensive Bissel Bolt XRT ION.
If you’re wanting the versatility to handle larger areas, maybe 1000-1500 square feet, then this is really the starting point if you’re considering the Bissell Bolt Series of vacuums. Though the dustbin is small like most 2-in-1’s, the longer runtime and shorter recharge time is a must if you want to do anything but spot clean occasionally.
All of the attachments for each Bissell Bolt vacuum will fit the other vacuums. So if you like the Pet Hair Tool that comes with the Bissell Bolt XRT Pet, then you can buy it separately and use it with your Bissell Bolt ION Plus. So you don’t have to give up that Lithium Ion battery just because of an attachment you like.
It’s still important to keep in mind that these 2-in-1’s aren’t meant for heavy cleaning. You will get the best performance on bare floors, and surface-level cleaning on low-pile carpet and rugs.
The dustbins are also tiny, so you will end up emptying them a couple of times if you are running this vacuum for the entire 30 minutes.
- Bare floors
- Low-pile carpet
- RV’s, Campers, Boats, Vehicles
As you can see the Bissell Bolt ION Plus is one of the better choices in the Bissell Bolt lineup in terms of battery and price. The lithium ion battery and relatively long runtime of 30 minutes are an advantage, and with the small price difference from the Bolt XRT Pet(#1315) and Bolt (#1313), you wonder why pay the same price for an inferior battery.
The difference between the Bolt ION Plus and Bolt XRT Pet, aside from the battery, is a pet attachment for the handheld and specialized pet brush roll for the upright.
If you are going to be dealing with pet hair, you will squeeze out a little better performance from the Bolt XRT Pet.
This is Bissell’s demo of the Bolt ION Plus 2-in-1.
This video by CNET is extremely harsh on the Bissell Bolt ION Plus. Their chief complaint being that it can’t handle the massive amount of pet hair they are trying to vacuum from a rug.
Honestly, this just isn’t how the vacuum is supposed to be used. You can’t expect a cordless 2-in-1 to be able to vacuum that much hair. If anything, this video gives an actual account of what you should not be buying this vacuum for and shows you what your expectations should be when buying a cordless 2-in-1.
The other demo they try is to vacuum cereal, which really should be a job for the handheld. Yes, you can’t vacuum up an entire bag of cereal with this vacuum in its upright form. You can likely vacuum up quite a bit with the handheld.
None of these are reasons to give this vacuum a bad rating when you have unrealistic expectations in the first place.
This video is worth a watch.
The suction and filtration system on this vacuum is simple. The real limitation is just the size of the filter and dust bin. It is important not run the vacuum with major obstructions in airflow, and for small bagless systems like this, the filter will be the first place to put a damper on air flow.
As you can see in the video above, pet hair will accumulate around the filter very quickly. While your dust bin may not be full, the filter can clog and drastically reduce the airflow and thus the cleaning power of the vacuum.
Cleaning the filter often and using this vacuum for low volume cleaning is best.
The small filtration system of a 2-in-1 is not ideal as the primary vacuum for cleaning up after pets, and the Bissell Bolt Ion Plus is no exception. Quick touch-up cleaning and getting to places that are ergonomically difficult with a traditional vacuum are really the strengths of a 2-in-1. So stick with a traditional corded vacuum for superior deep cleaning after pets.
Extended Reach Tool
An extended hose isn’t a common feature for 2-in-1 handhelds, so this makes this vacuum somewhat unique. Ceiling fans, cobwebs in wall corners, upholstery: the reach of this vacuum is only rivaled by traditional canister vacuums. Having this kind of reach on a cordless handheld 2-in-1 is nice.
Battery and Runtime
- 18 Volts
- Runtime: 30 minutes
The battery is integrated into the vacuum body and is not user replaceable. If you’re not worried about voiding the warranty and have some DIY tendencies, then you can buy a battery replacement and solder it in yourself. You will need to match the specs and form factor to make sure it fits and provides adequate power. Stores like Batteries Plus may even be willing to do the replacement for you and help you get the right battery specifications.
Warranty and Customer Service
All parts have a 2-year warranty if a part is malfunctioning or defective. The warranty doesn’t apply to the routine maintenance of components such as filters, belts, or brushes.
Users that experienced problems have a positive experience from Bissell in getting repairs or having them honor their warranty and providing a replacement vacuum.
The main complaint from users is the lack of suction and the small size of the dust cup.
The review video by CNET(posted above) is pretty harsh on this vacuum. While the video displays the Bissel Bolt Plus’ suction accurately, it is important to realize what this vacuum is meant for, and you will see this on all our reviews regarding 2-in-1’s.
Many users do complain about the vacuum’s ability to pick up pet hair. Less pet hair than is shown in the CNET demo.
Due to the small size of the dust container and filter, users report that vacuuming even just a 100 square feet room may require cleaning the dust container and filter multiple times.

The Bissell Bolt ION Plus is not the strongest 2-in-1. It doesn’t come with a motorized brush attachment for the handheld like the Hoover Air Cordless 2-in-1 or the Dyson V6 series. It does come with an extended reach tool.
The Bolt ION Plus is a good choice if you don’t have pet hair to deal with.
It is light and has the convenient 2-way folding handle which is great if you have trouble bending over to get under furniture.
The battery is lithium ion which will last longer and be easier to deal with than NiMH like the Bolt or Bolt XRT Pet. Those require more attention to how you charge/discharge the battery.
If you really want a cordless vacuum that can deal with pet hair do not get a 2-in-1. The sacrifices made with the size of the dust container and filter to get to a 2-in-1 are not ideal for pets.
